Is it in the Bible? Money=Evil
Here’s a saying that I’m sure you’ve heard, “Money is the root of all evil.”
Certainly you have heard stories of people corrupted by wealth– celebrities, politicians, etc. But money can also be used responsibly and put to good use. So is this saying true?
Is it in the Bible?
Answer: NO!
Wait a second, isn’t there something in the Bible like that? Yes, Paul did say something *like* that, but the saying leaves out a few critical words. Here’s 1 Timothy 6:10:
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Do you see the difference? Paul says the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, not the money itself. It’s a heart issue.
A huge take-away from this is the importance of each word of scripture and the necessity of knowing scripture. It’s all too easy to paraphrase scripture, and in doing so, lose the true meaning.
How can you use this often misquoted verse then to share the gospel? It provides a great opportunity to lovingly correct someone and open God’s Word to show them the true statement!
