Who are you?

I’m David Nalls and I’m the minister to middle school students here at Hunter Street. I’ve been doing student ministry for about 10 years and I consider it a true privilege. I have no desire to do anything else and I hope when I’m 50 I’m still working with students! I’m married to Melissa. She’s beautiful and amazing. She also has a heart for student ministry and she is my greatest asset. We’re expecting our first child in October and I’m very excited about that. I don’t mind telling you that I’m also a little freaked out!

Where are you from?

I tell people I’m not really from anywhere. My dad’s a pastor so we moved around some when I was growing up. I was born in Tallahassee, but we moved to New Orleans when I was very young, then to Selma, then to south Georgia, then back to New Orleans. I lived in New Orleans longer than anywhere. I graduated from high school there. I attended the University of New Orleans and then New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I met my amazing wife in New Orleans. After seminary we moved to south Florida and then to Birmingham. So home for me, is wherever I am.

How did you get to Hunter Street?

Prior to serving at Hunter Street I had been doing student ministry at another church in the area. One afternoon I had lunch with Smokey, who I went to seminary with, to talk about some things God was doing in my life and that conversation led to another which led to another which led to another…and after much prayer, here I am!

How long have you been at Hunter Street?

I have been serving at Hunter Street since August, 2009.

How did you come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

I was one of the fortunate ones who was raised by parents who passionately followed Christ. As a result of their influence and God working in my young heart, my dad led me to Christ when I was 6 years old. My life has not always been easy, but God has always been faithful. He has taken me places I never dreamed I would go and worked in me and through me in ways I never would have imagined. What an exciting adventure to walk with the Most High!

What verse or passage in the Bible is the most meaningful to you?
I really love Psalm 139 because I think it’s a beautiful picture of God’s sovereignty.
Isaiah 43:1-5 has been very special because it’s a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people.

Who are your heroes?

I’ve been blessed to have some godly men and women pour themselves into my life through the years. My granddad was one of the greatest men I’ve ever known. He taught me about patience and service and humility.

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy hiking and camping. I spend a lot of time at Oak Mountain. I do martial arts because it’s such a great physical challenge. I love to read. I also occasionally enjoy riding donkeys.
