Becky FosterWho are you?
I am a child of the Most High King! My name is Becky Dedge and I am the Director of Girls Ministry at Hunter Street. I am passionate about serving the Lord and making my life count for His glory!

Where are you from?
Birmingham is my home town! I was actually raised in a suburb, Mountain Brook, which is where I graduated from high school.

How did you get to Hunter Street?
This was a comical yet God–saturated process! In January 2006, Hunter Street Students had a Winter Bible Study led by Joel Frederick on Nehemiah. At the time, I lived with a girl who was on staff at Hunter Street and led a discipleship group for girls. She was coming to the study and I decided I would join her for what I thought to be 4 nights of a study on Nehemiah. We got to the building a little late and were greeted by Terry. Now you would have to know Terry to find this part comical, but for those of you who do not, you should know he is the Master of Recruiting at Hunter Street (which God sovereignly worked in my favor)! The conversation went a little something like this:

Terry: “Glad you are here, I am Terry Slay. Are you leading a discipleship group?”
Becky: “ Thanks! No, I just came with a friend tonight to hear about Nehemiah.”
Terry: “Well are you a mother of a student?”
Becky: (laughing) “No!” (Did I really look that old?)
Terry: “Well, if you ever want to lead a discipleship group, just let me know.”
Becky: “Actually, I am on staff at another church working with middle school and high school girls so I don’t think I will be available.”

Anyhow…you get the picture. From there we stepped outside into the breezeway so we could hear over the loud music and discovered that we had mutual friends and family. Terry then began to share their heart for hiring someone to work with the girls at Hunter Street. He asked if I was interested and I said, “No thank you, but I will be happy to talk about girls ministry sometime.” I came back the next couple of nights to the study and within the week I had a meeting scheduled with Terry. We talked a while, another meeting was scheduled with Ric and suddenly I had an offer to be the Director of Girls Ministry at Hunter Street. This all happened in less than a month! I have to say that this was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. I was very comfortable where I was. I had been at the same church for 18 years, I had been discipling the senior girls since they were in 6th grade, my family was in the church and I had no intentions of leaving. Through the Lord pulling on my heart and leading me through prayer and his Word, I knew that I had to be obedient and make the move to Hunter Street! January 25, was my first day and I have been thankful ever since!

How long have you been at Hunter Street?
Oops…I think I already answered this one! I have been here since January of 2006.

How did you come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
It is by our sweet Savior’s grace that I came to know him at a young age! I was 9 years old when I accepted Christ. It was with the faith of a child that I surrendered my life and became a servant of the Most High God. Growing up, my personal relationship with the Lord grew; however, looking back it was characterized by legalism. Meaning, I feel I lived my life by a list of do’s and don’ts rather than joyful obedience to the Lord.
There are two seasons of life that proved to be pivotal in my relationship with the Lord. The first came when I was a junior in college and the Lord began revealing himself in new ways. I began to really dig into scripture and fell in love with the depths of His Word. Rather than just take what I had always been told about my faith at face value I started to learn the theology behind my beliefs.
The second season was not much later in life. I had a fairly easy childhood…great family, great friends, great church! The ease continued until my senior year in college. The previous summer I traveled to Russia and spent 6 weeks in a town doing mission work. All summer I prayed this prayer written by a man named David Livingstone, “Lord, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me. Sever any ties but the tie that binds me to Thy service and Thy heart.” Only two months being back in the states did the Lord begin to answer my prayer. A long relationship ended, my family had a crisis, and my health declined. He broke me of all comfort in my life and taught me about joy in the midst of suffering, true commitment, and how Mighty our God is no matter what the situation. It was through suffering that the Lord drew me to new depths in my walk with Him. There are always ups and downs but how sweet it is to be a child of God! I long to be used by God in a mighty way and that He would make my life count for His glory!

What verse or passage in the Bible is the most meaningful to you?
“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” ~Ephesians 2:1-10

What a beautiful picture of God’s love for his children. This passage reminds me of my complete despair without Christ and of His sovereign grace in my life. My identity is also established as God’s workmanship who has a purpose!
